Covert Affairs - Grounded

With Annie's (Piper Perabo) secret revealed, Annie, Joan (Kari Matchett), and Calder (Hill Harper) all find themselves the subject of governmental hearings as to what else Miss Walker may have been hiding besides her medical condition which even puts the the recent win of taking down Nathan Mueller (Max Martini) into question. Despite being put on desk duty and preparing to testify in front of those who control her future with CIA, Annie's attention is split when she's contacted by Auggie's (Christopher Gorham) conspiracy nut asset who reports to have information about who was really behind the Chicago bombing.

Running her own field op with the help of Ryan McQuaid (Nic Bishop) and his $100,000, Annie blows off the deposition in order to find out just what the eccentric asset knows. Sadly, Annie risks everything for no reward as her informant turns up dead leaving the credibility of his intelligence in serious doubt. In an extended montage, "Grounded" continues to push the Annie/McQuaid relationship forward (selling it quite well) while finally letting the other shoe drop as Annie begins to suspect that McQuaid may not be the knight in shining armor he presents to the world.

Annie's suspension is only one of many moving pieces to the season as Auggie officially ends his relationship with Hayley (Amy Jo Johnson) and Calder, who has grown quite a bit in a season and a half, puts his own neck on the line to stand-up for both Joan and Annie despite possible serious consequences. "Grounded" also slyly introduces the possibility that Caitlyn Cooke (Perrey Reeves), rather than her boss, may turn out to be the season's evil spy. Finally selling me on the Annie/McQuaid relationship, I would actually be in favor of that twist and having McQuaid not be revealed as the villain I've been expecting all season.
