Bones - The Lance to the Heart

While working to uncover the conspiracy inside the FBI that dates back to the days of J. Edgar Hoover and solve the murder of Sweets (John Francis Daley), Booth (David Boreanaz) and the Jeffersonian team take time out to say farewell to one of their own. Stopping Booth from going out and recklessly attacking the man (Sam Anderson) he thinks (but has no proof) is responsible for the death of Sweets, Bones (Emily Deschanel) gives her team enough time to follow the facts and uncover the true mastermind (JD Cullum) of the conspiracy.

Even in an episode about his character, Daley's absence can be keenly felt in several scenes usually punched up by the character's humor and humility. John Boyd has some big shoes to fill as the goofy sidekick. Daisy (Carla Gallo) is understandably understated here and it will be interesting to see if she eventually returns to her more jubilant self or Sweets' death marks a permanent change for the character. Searching a conspiracy gives Hodgins (T.J Thyne) an outlet for his loss but it's his wife who is able link the conspirators together and, with the help of Sweets' notes, point the group to their killer.

Despite the fact that it put Booth in jail and cost Sweets his life, the Hoover conspiracy isn't one of the show's better arcs. It works well-enough given the fallout, but even the conclusion and the discovery of the secret records inside the Jeffersonian feels a bit off leaving time for a short farewell to Daley's character that (like much of the show's last couple of seasons) could have been handled with a bit more care.
