Killjoys - The Harvest

Understanding that his partner is hiding something from him, his growing jealousy of the ease with which D'Avin (Luke Macfarlane) becomes a Killjoy, and a plea from a friend (Elena Juatco) all factor in to John (Aaron Ashmore) accepting a warrant to find the woman's wayward husband who disappeared while working as an endundetured servant harvesting crops. Although Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) isn't keen on the idea, she relents realizing her partner needs a win (and the situation allows her to dress the part of a pampered dignitary while he must go undercover as a migrant worker in the fields).

Left back home, D'Avin is given his own B-story working alongside a local physcician Dr. Pawter Simms (Sarah Power) whose help he needs to pass the psych evaluation needed to become a Killjoy. Despite quickly diagnosing D'Avin's PTSD, the doctor and soldier strike a bargain in return for services that leads D'Avin to believe the woman might be just as screwed-up as he is. D'Avin eventually gets his medical clearance although the doctor's probing of him reveals more problems the character will have to deal with over the course of the season.

"The Harvest" allows John to get his time in the sun, single-handedly finding and taking down their mark while Dutch has some fun of her own at the plantation manor. The episode highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the younger Jacobi brother who is willing to do almost anything for a friend but is also quick to jealousy and rash action making him, as the show itself declares, a mix of bravery and stupidity. We also witness Dutch choose not to kill the man marked for death by her old father figure, and, based on the flashbacks we've already seen when she failed to follow his orders, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for her choice to catch back up with her and her friends.
