Castle - The G.D.S.

Another Firefly cast member makes an appearance as Castle (Nathan Fillion) heads to Los Angeles. On the west coast along with Hayley (Toks Olagundoye) and Alexis (Molly C. Quinn) to investigate his missing time during his disappearance, Castle is recruited by a secret society of detectives to investigate the murder of one of its own members. A little digging into man's death reveals he's the latest victim of a pair of serial killers leaving victims in both New York and Los Angeles over the past few months. To earn his place within the society Castle will have to out snoop another detective (Summer Glau) also interested in the G.D.S.'s recent vacancy.

It's fun to see yet another Firefly alumn make an appearance on the show, especially as Glau is pitted against Castle for most of the episode (including as one half of a ridiculous distraction to allow Castle to search for murder weapon). As to the other storyline, Castle gets answers... just not the ones he was expecting. First, Alexis uncovers Hayley's involvement in his missing time, which turns out not to be the bombshell she initially believes it to be. And second, he uncovers the reason for his decision to wipe his memory and the information concerning LokSat which would put Beckett (Stana Katic) in danger (and may have directly caused the deaths of her former co-workers).

Hayley's reveal is a nice twist, and helps explain why her character has stuck around to protect Castle and Alexis this season. Katic's absence (she doesn't appear in the episode) isn't really felt until the LockSat reveal. This allows for the New York thread of the storyline to be run by Ryan (Seamus Dever), and Esposito (Jon Huertas) who also have some fun at Lanie's (Tamala Jones) expense. The west coast half of the serial killer storyline is wrapped up a bit too easily, but that thread produces a couple of interesting moments as it gives us audiences a bit of information about Heat Wave's box office failure. And like Adam Baldwin, Glau is introduced as a character who could make a reappearance down the line on another case.
