Supergirl - Solitude

Smallville's Supergirl becomes the latest familiar face to make an appearance on Supergirl as Laura Vandervoort makes her first appearance on the show as the homicidal computer intelligence Brainiac 8. Choosing to reveal herself following Astra's (Laura Benanti) death, the A.I. threatens the safety of National City by firing a nuclear missile towards Supergirl's adopted home.

Brainiac 8 wouldn't be my choice for the version of Brainiac to be introduced to the show but it does offer Kara another legitimate female adversary (who technically Kara isn't able to defeat). Astra's death continues to be a major theme of the show as Sueprgirl's departure from the DEO nearly costs National City dearly. Kara's need for information outside of the DEO allows Superman's black friend James "Don't Call Me Jimmy" Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) to introduce our heroine to the Fortress of Solitude whose trophies include a Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring possibly suggesting Kara may eventually make a trip to the future.

Relationships provide the backdrop for most the the B-stories this week. Along with Kara struggling with how to deal with J'onn (David Harewood) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) struggling with the truth (a subplot I'm glad to see wrapped up before the credits), the episode also begins an unexpected romantic subplot between Winn (Jeremy Jordan) and Siobhan (Italia Ricci). Less surprising is Lucy (Jenna Dewan-Tatum) growing tired of her boyfriend's obvious affection for both Supergirl and Kara (even if she doesn't realize his feelings are for the same person).
