Elementary - Henny Penny the Sky Is Falling

Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu) investigate the murder of a mathmatician whose recent published work has thrown an entire industry into a tizzy. Usually using his skills to find sound investments for his firm, the victim (who ends up skewered to a wall) spent weeks on a scientific paper suggesting how the space community searches for and targets asteroids which could be potentially harmful to the Earth is wrong. While it will take nearly a decade to sort out the truth of the man's work (which Holmes and Watson discovers may have ulterior motives) the detectives run in circles seeking someone who would have a legitimate motive for the man's untimely demise.

While the murder of the week keeps the pair on their toes, the B-story creates a small rift between the detectives when Gregson's (Aidan Quinn) attempts to include both his consultants on his team for a commendation. While Joan wants to honor Gregson's wishes and stand with the police, Holmes' adamant nature of shunning all credit rears his head again. The disagreement comes to an intriguing conclusion in which Holmes is uncharacteristically vulnerable offering Watson his very personal reasons for not wanting anything to come between their partnership. Disguised as a discussion about "The Work," the scene focuses on the single most important relationship of the series in a honest and frank manner. While Joan gets her way, you have to wonder if Holmes' fears may have even the smallest hint of truth.
