Beyond - Ties that Bind

After an intriguing set-up, Beyond takes a bit of a step back in an episode which continues to tease larger ramifications but spends most of its time on typical family dysfunction. After learning that his family isn't as perfect as they've struggled to make it seem, Holden (Burkely Duffield) finally becomes convinced to allow Willa (Dilan Gwyn) to help restore his memory of his time in the Realm and, she hopes, learn to harness and control his dangerous and unpredictable abilities. There's also a bit of foreshadowing that although Willa cares for Holden, and will do her best to protect him, her motives are more complicated than she's willing to let on (and isn't above putting him in danger to get what she needs). There are a couple of surprises here. First, as the show seemed to be moving towards pushing Willa and Holden together, I didn't expect the return of the girl Holden met at the party (Emilija Baranac) and a possible love triangle set-up so early in the series. Second, I'm curious to see if the appearance of a concerned preacher may have darker undertones than just undermining family unity (anyone else suspect he's a mysterious agent?). And finally, the show wastes no time in confirming the Man in the Yellow Jacket (Peter Kelamis) is a dangerous threat as the show quickly deals with Holden's childhood best friend whose disappearance is going to create new problems for our protagonist.
