Lucifer - Quintessential Deckerstar

There's a bit of deja vu in play in "Quintessential Deckerstar" as Lucifer (Tom Ellis) attempts to force the old normality back onto his relationship with Chloe (Lauren German). We also get a murder of the week, an apparent home invasion gone wrong which will tie back into Charlotte's (Tricia Helfer) past as a defense attorney, and a series of events involving Pierce (Tom Welling) and Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) which build on season-long arcs and will lead directly into next week's season finale.

Finally Maze ends the self-destructive streak she's been on and rediscovers a bit of the humanity that made the character much more interesting in previous seasons. It's frustrating to see Lucifer act the fool, although that's the point as we see the Devil more from Chloe's point-of-view in this episode. Lucifer's understanding that Chloe doesn't need him to do her job, but that she wants his help and wants him in her life is the lightning bolt realization that Lucifer has been oblivious to for... well, since the show began. And then, of course, life gets in the way.

The murder of the week, and Charlotte helping to catch a killer who she helped escape justice years ago provide some nice character moments leading into the episode's final scene. Along with a look at her Hell loop, which now includes her boyfriend as a potential victim of her past, and the scenes between Charlotte and Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) offer a great episode for Helfer to exit stage left. I'll miss Charlotte, who only at the end was really beginning to find herself, but the choice to have her final actions not only save Amenadiel and ruin Pierce's plans but also be the turning point for the angel to rediscover himself makes for some damn good television.

The questions still lingering at the end of the episode involve the solving of Charlotte's murder, a showdown between Lucifer and Pierce, and unpacked baggage between the Devil and the detective. That final questions opens a whole new can of worms for the show to explore next season. Just how honest is Lucifer prepared to be with Chloe? And just how accepting is the detective to be with the impossible? And, if indeed, Chloe accepts the truth about Lucifer what does that do to their relationship? Just how next week's episode comes to a close should offer us a clue to where the show might be headed going in to next season.
