Clueless

Throwback Thursday takes us back 30 years to writer/director Amy Heckerling adaption of Jane Austen's Emma through a valley girl filter which is now available on a new 30th Anniversary Edition 4K. The results are quite entertaining. A touchstone for the 90s, especially for those who grew up with the film, Clueless stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher, a rich and popular high school student whose materialistic world view will be challenged over the course of the film in a failed romance with the obviously gay Christian (Justin Walker), a makeover of new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) that blows up in her face, and the discovery that she's developed feelings for her older stepbrother (Paul Rudd).

The stylish coming of age story also includes Stacey Dash as Cher's bestie Dionne and her boyfriend Murray (Donald Faison) who are almost constantly fighting, Dan Hedaya as Cher's gruff by loving father, Breckin Meyer as the skateboarding stoner Travis, Jeremy Sisto as your typical high school jerk, and Wallace Shawn and Twink Caplan as two lonely teachers Cher brings together (which turns out far better than her other matchmaking attempt).

Memorable moments from the film include Dionne driving onto the freeway, Cher's failed attempts at seducing Christian, moments where we see Hedaya is both smarter and wiser than he appears (such as picking up on the attraction between Cher and Josh long before either admits it to themselves), Cher's debate logic, and of course the Cher's great "As if!" reaction for unwanted attention on the high school grounds. Also of note are the amazing costumes and clothes from the period, draping Silverstone, Dash, and others in peak 90s teen fashion.

An immediate success, the film helped launch the careers of many of the young actors including Silverstone (at this point only really known for being in Aerosmith music videos) and Murphy. Very much a product of its place and time, Clueless has also stayed in the public consciousness eventually also launching a series of books and a TV-series as well. The new 30th edition 4K includes a number of short featurettes, a trivia game, decal and stickers, a movie poster and collectible movie cards, and the film's trailer.
