Nancy Drew... Reporter

Mystery Monday takes us back for the second Nancy Drew film to star Bonita Granville. Notably not adapted from any of the novels, Nancy Drew... Reporter puts Nancy Drew in an amateur reporter contest where she trades the story she's been assigned by the disinterested editor to look into a murder case. With her usual pluck, Nancy muddles through mostly relying on coincidence and dumb luck, including the real killers literally running into her and leading her to the scene of the crime.

Relying more on stumbling into truth more than investigating, like the first film Nancy enlists the help of Ted Nickerson (Frankie Thomas). This time around his two younger siblings (Mary Lee and Dickie Jones) also get dragged into the action, mostly for comic relief and childish antics (although their mischief does unintentionally lead to the killer's capture). The kids also drag in Sgt. Entwhistle (Olin Howland), in drag no less, in a failed attempt to recover the missing evidence which would prove Eula Denning's (Betty Amann) innocence.

If mystery is what your after, Nancy Drew... Reporter is likely to disappoint, leaning hard into making a kid-friendly film more focused on cute laughs and antics than solving a case. Despite not being as strong as the first film, Nancy Drew... Reporter would be followed by another sequel starring Granville released only four months later.
