Remington Steele - Steele Framed
Throwback Thursday takes us back to a con man pretending to be the world’s greatest detective in Remington Steele. To the internal timeline of the show, "Steele Framed" occurs on the one-year anniversary on which our leading man assumed the show's titular role. A phone call in the middle of the night leads Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) to a dark lit road where he runs over who he believes called for help. Meanwhile, the person who actually staged the accident continues to try and frame Steele for a larger crime which brings the interest of a homicide detective (Gary Frank) and eventually puts Steele on the run.
Framing Steele for a diamond heist and murder, even Laura (Stephanie Zimbalist) is momentarily shaken, especially when all evidence they find only further implicates Steele. However, she and Mildred (Doris Roberts) aren't above a few shenanigans to lose a police tail. Confounded by the expert skill needed for such a large scam, the twist of the episode comes from the enemy coming not from this Steele's past but from the made-up version of the character long before he stepped into the role.
Despite knowing his innocence from the start, the elaborate nature of the frame (well explained over the course of the investigation) works to knock our characters off their game. Although Steele is eventually cleared of all charges, largely due to the increasingly elaborate games played by his nemesis, Major Percy Descoine (Guy Boyd) manages to get away. Boyd would return once more to the show, later in the Second Season, to cause more havoc for Remington Steele.
