The Avengers - The Decapod
Throwback Thursday takes us back to the adventures of British spy John Steed (Patrick Macnee) and his various partners. "The Decapod" is the first episode to introduce Julie Stevens as nightclub singer Venus Smith who Steed recruits, and tricks, into helping him on his latest case (which is certainly a bizarre hour of television). Although the situation does highlight Steed as a scoundrel willing to use whatever, or whoever, is at his disposal to get the job done, I'm not sure the logic of his plan holds up (even if it is ultimately successful).
Steed's mission is to protect the President (Paul Stassino) of the Balkan Republic during his stay in Britain. Aware that the man needs a new assistant (due to the untimely death of the original), Steed tricks Venus into applying for the job making her believe the man is interested in helping launch a world tour for her singing career.
Over the next few days, several around the President continue to die by the hands of a masked wrestler, who is in turn impersonating another wrestler, until eventually everything comes to a head in a wrestling ring where the truth is revealed. While there's a kernel of interest here, and obviously some interest in highlight wresting in this episode, it's not one of the show's better episodes.
