Secret Avengers #1

The post-Norman Osborne Avengers relaunches continue with Steve Rogers' own black ops team of Secret Avengers. The first issue does a good job of giving you a feel for each member (Black Widow and Valkyrie, War Machine, Moon Knight and Ant-Man, Sharon Carter, and Beast) while providing flashbacks on how Rogers convinced the more reluctant members to join the team. As first issues go its solid. Not great, but solid (though the final panel did made me wince). Worth a look.

I liked this one very much. I like the mix of characters and powers and especially liked the portrayal of Steve Rogers. He was tough and smart and driven and not whinning at all about his former role as Captain America. I was so hoping that Marvel wouldn't make him fight and claw his way back to the role he is best known for. They could have made lots of money by extending that story thread for a year but for some reason just let it go. Bucky is Cap, Steve is Shield and we move on.

I wasn't sure about Rogers being "the new Nick Fury" but, for at least this issue, it works. It looks like they're going to let him stay hands-on and in the action, though I'm still not sure about his new costume.
