Pretty Little Liars - Hush, Hush, Sweet Liars

Sorry, I don't get it. The Sixth Season of Pretty Little Liars comes to a close with the plan of the Liars to capture the new A backfiring (like their plans usually do) leading to Hanna (Ashley Benson) being taken by their adversary. The finale's big reveal takes place first under the ruins of Radley and later at the remains of Caleb's (Tyler Blackburn) trap as we learn Alison's mother has a twin sister, Mary Drake (Andrea Parker), who is the real mother of Charlotte. Apparently she's been working with Elliot (Huw Collins) this entire time to steal Alison's 51% share of the Carissimi Group. This explains the sudden gaslighting of Alison by her husband and aunt (admittedly creepy and effective, but should have started weeks ago), but not the torturing of the Liars themselves (as it seems the an extremely unlikely way to solve Charlotte's murder).

Old romances flare up in the finale as the positive response to their book proves to be the final push Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra (Ian Harding) need to admit their feelings for one another. During a vulnerable moment between the pair Hanna admits her feelings for Caleb (while we also see the end of their relationship in a flashback). And Toby's (Keegan Allen) decision to help Spencer (Troian Bellisario) on election night puts a major strain on his relationship with Yvonne (Kara Royster).

For an episode with major twists and turns there are several bizarre choices that are needed to make it work. For example, why does the concerned Emily (Shay Mitchell) abandon an emotionally volatile Alison (Sasha Pieterse) to vote? Are you telling me she couldn't find a single person to watch her (or vote before she went over to the DiLaurentis house)? Also, for all their preparation, Caleb and the Liars abandon Hanna to an unforeseen fate by leaving her unsupported at the crucial moment. Despite feeling overly convoluted, "Hush, Hush, Sweet Liars" does end the season with a reveal of the series' final two villains meaning the Liars will open return next season at least knowing their enemy.
