Descendants 2
Bringing back the main stars of Descendants, the sequel focuses on Mal (Dove Cameron) struggling with the weight of expectations. Abandoning her new life in an attempt to return to simpler times, Mal heads back to the Isle of the Lost only for her friends Ben (Mitchell Hope), Evie (Sofia Carson), Carlos (Cameron Boyce), and Jay (Booboo Stewart) to follow.
The most notable addition to the franchise is China Anne McClain as Uma, pirate captain and daughter of Ursula with a longstanding feud with Mal who provides the frenemy to be eventually won over (although that won't be accomplished until the next film in the series).
The film's two main plots involve the battle of wills between Mal and Uma, and Ben convincing Mal where she belongs. Although McClain is a welcome addition, the rest of the pirates are immediately forgettable and the sequel's plot (mostly rehashing themes from the first film) isn't as strong the second time around. And ultimately there's only so much you can do with pirates landlocked for the entire movie while characters onboard a ship awkwardly pretend to be thrown around by the waves in classic Star Trek low-budget fashion.
