The Dragon Prince - Book One: Moon

The First Season of Netflix's anime series The Dragon Prince, known as "Book One: Moon," follows the adventures of two young princes and and Elvish assassin with an aversion to killing anyone, in the middle of a generational blood feud between humans and Elves that the trio hope to end by returning a stolen dragon egg back to the realm of magic. Although the opening episode "Echoes of Thunder" is pretty heavy in opening narration and exposition to set the stage for the events which will follow, the series builds momentum over its nine-episode "Book One" by focusing on the young protagonists of Callum (Jack De Sena), Ezran (Sasha Rojen), and Rayla (Paula Burrows) who push through initial distrust to work together and begin their journey.

Featuring magic, adventure, and self-deprecating humor, there's plenty to enjoy about The Dragon Prince. Even if the show doesn't bring much original to the genre, there's an inescapable charm to the characters and storyline. With characters on both side favoring the continued bloodshed between Elves and Humans, there are enemies on both sides who would like to see the trio fail. While the focus of the series is primarily on the princes and the elf, there are some intriguing supporting characters here, such as the young sorceress Claudia (Racquel Belmonte) and the stoic Amaya, who I look forward to seeing get larger roles as the series continues. I'd also be happy to see more of Ellis and Ava in "Book Two."
