With Kara (Melissa Benoist) focusing on exposing Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) and clearing Supergirl's name, it falls on Dreamer (Nicole Maines) to fight the good fight and help out aliens targeted and rounded up by Ben Lockwood's (Sam Witwer) fully-deputized Agents of Liberty. Lockwood's star continues to rise inside the government, but the episode does offer some heavy blows to his ego in defeat at his attempt to capture Dreamer (thanks to some timely help by a couple of friends), in his son seeing through his father's hate speech, and in the tragedy of his wife (the source of which he unintentionally put in motion).
The episode is aptly named as it's where the two storylines combine and Kara introduces the world to the hopeful Dreamer that "American Dreamer" finds a way to still tap into the core hope that Supergirl usually provides (even if Kara never suits up). With Supergirl's image still blemished by Lex's secret machinations, a new voice is able to able to step in, remind humanity of its better angels, and piss of Ben Lockwood to no end. The episode also features James "Don't Call Me Jimmy" Olsen's (Mehcad Brooks) struggle as the Harun-El fights his PTSD seeing it as a disease needing to be cured. While the scenes allow or some strong moments from Brooks, they take up a bit too much of the episode and Kara's obvious absence is problematic. However, Kara's realization of her myopic view of events does allow her to reconnect with Lena (Katie McGrath) who comes (at least partially) clean about helping Lex and provides Kara with another clue to uncovering Lex's plans which apparently will lead her to Kasnia (and one step closer to her doppelganger).
