The Sandman - The Ruler of Hell / More Devils Than Vast Hell Can Hold
"The Ruler of Hell" and "More Devils Than Vast Hell Can Hold" conclude the season's first arc with Morpheus' (Tom Sturridge) journey to Hell going not at all how he thought. Finding the realm empty and a weary Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) abdicating their throne, inspired by Morpheus leaving his own realm, Dream becomes responsible for finding the next ruler of the Realm (and there are many who want the job from Norse Gods to Faerie Folk to demons to invisible entities in a box).
The pair of episodes is notable for several reasons including reuniting Morpheus with , if only briefly, giving us a look at the first performance of Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream (to an unusual audience), the Dreamlord striking a bargain with Loki (Freddie Fox), and the introduction of a new member of the realm in Nuala (Ann Skelly) who is gifted to Morpheus but seems, at least somewhat, content with her new home. If only one of the two women were going to stay, Nuala is certainly the more interesting choice. And as for Destiny (Adrian Lester) big prophecy, it seems Dream's jaunt to Hell and back didn't, in itself, cause the upheaval yet to come (although the actions he does take may well have ripples over the remaining episodes.
