Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand Plums #5

Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand Plums concludes with the second-half of "Tabo" which opens with Miyamoto Usagi, Yukichi, and the pilgrims running into further resistance on their way to the shrine. It's hard not to feel a bit of current events creeping in to the story with the anti-immigrant guards attempting to keep out undesirables. The ronin manage to quicky convince the men, one of whom Usagi notices as one of the bandits who have attacked the pilgrims on the trail, the error of their own ways.

The story ends with a melancholy miracle where the hundreds of the shrine sleep through the night as Tabo alone receives the gift from the shrine capable of curing his illness, although the selfless traveler chooses a different path. While this two-part tale is separate from the original story in this arc, it hits all the right notes about doing what's right, sacrifice, and honor. But I wouldn't expect anything less from Stan Sakai.
