A Big Bold Beautiful Journey
Set in a world not unlike our own, albeit one with a bit more magic underneath, Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie star as two single New Yorkers who meet at a wedding of mutual friends. While that may sound like a pretty typical setup, the road to the wedding (and the road home) are anything but normal. David and Sarah each make use of an odd car rental agency using old cars and yet highly advanced GPS (voiced by Jodie Turner-Smith) which knows where each of them need to go. After both agree to go on a big bold beautiful journey, the pair are reunited and begin a series of adventures that will take them into each other's pasts reliving key moments of their lives.
While it's easy to simply categorize the film as a romance, which it certainly is, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is more a journey of self-discovery for each character. That they aren't alone forces them to put events and feelings in perspective and be honest about who they are and how they arrived at each moment they find themselves.
Quirky, and a bit too cute for its own good, the film from director Kogonada nevertheless does have both style and heart in abundance. Both actors shine in moments of self-awareness finding ways to move past old mistakes and past trauma and embark on what is, as promised, a big bold beautiful journey. Farrell is quite subdued here but Robbie continues to prove she can light up a screen under any circumstances.
While mostly panned by critics, I never got bored with A Big Bold Beautiful Journey and quite enjoyed the design of the film from its doorways in the middle of nowhere to the quite unusual car company and its employees. While I don't think it hits as hard as it should, I still found charm in the journey with these two characters (even if the destination was always too easy to guess).
