Only Murders in the Building - Nail in the Coffin
As teased at the end of last season, Season Five of Only Murders in the Building begins with Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) investigating the death of Lester (Teddy Coluca) which everyone appears to believe was accidental. The trios' latest case will take them to Staten Island for an unusual meeting with Sofia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni) and her sons in the most unexpected of locations. Leaving that meeting believing there may be a connection between Lester's untimely end and the disappearance of Sofia's husband Nicky (Bobby Cannavale who will make his own memorable entrance before the end of the show), a clue will lead Charles and Mabel uncovering a new part of the Arconia in what appears to be a hidden speakeasy.
It's a bit of a wacky premiere, especially making use of the house from The Godfather while then undercutting the suggested mob aspects of the crime. And the funeral allows for some over-the-top physical comedy. We similar aspects from the previous season in the introduction of a new part of the hotel and dead stars who will no doubt be making appearances in flashbacks as our podcasters look into the crime. It is nice to see all three united this season on the case from the get-go, even if Oliver's fear of the mob does take a bit of convincing. While playing quite the familiar tune, the dive into the side character's death, along with the second dead body found at the end of the episode by Oliver, and the mysterious gambling parlor are intriguing pieces to begin the latest mystery.
