Spies Like Us

Released 40 years ago, Spies Like Us stars Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd as a pair of governmental screw-ups turned would-be spies. Needing decoys for a top secret project, the Defense Intelligence Agency rush the pair through training and thrown into the field with the belief that they will take focus off the real team deployed into the Soviet Union (with the mission to fire a ICBM at the United States). Of course the running gag of the movie is that the pair manage to somehow keep getting out of trouble and by the end the fate of the entire world will rest in their hands.

It certainly has memorable bits ("Doctor, Doctor, Doctor..."), but the film is a bit of a mess including a pretty grueling opening act before the script throws the pair together in some crazy training montages and eventually deploying them in the field. We also get Donna Dixon and Vanessa Angel (albeit in a smaller role), as potential love interests for the pair, along with a number of cameos. The film didn't fare well with critics but it did well at the box office and has remained something of a guilty pleasure on home video.

Top 5 Funniest/Memorable Moments:

  1. The Doctor introductions.
  2. We're Americans!
  3. The shenanigans during the pair taking the test (which are later replayed for them).
  4. Honestly, anything with the camera beautifully framing Donna Dixon (Aykroyd was a damn lucky man).
  5. The training montage (my favorite being the vertical impact simulation).
