Legacies - Salvatore: The Musical!

Legacies offers its version of a musical episode with "Salvatore: The Musical!" Unlike how several different shows have handled the concept, the characters don't suddenly burst into song. Instead, all the musical numbers are saved for the second-half of the episode in which the show puts on its first musical. The episode's events are caused by the release of a Sprite from Malivore, taking the form of the school's guidance counselor Robin Goodfellow (T.J. Ramini). The monster distracts the students for a time while playing with MG (Quincy Fouse) who keeps discovering the Sprite's secret only to forget before he can tell anyone else, which provides one of the best running gags of the series. Although Goodfellow's actions are initially cruel, pushing characters apart and causing conflict and anger, ultimately they are able to bring several characters closer together.

Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) is tapped by Goodfellow to write both the music and script for a musical about the school's history. The result is that several of the show's regulars end up playing the roles of characters from The Vampire Diaries. Although I've never been able to stomach the Twilight-ish melodrama of Diaries, Legacies has fun with the crossover (of sorts). Highlights from the episode include musical performances of both Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) who both find strength on stage. Lizzie also finds something more in a tender moment with Jade (Giorgia Whigham) after an injury caused by Goodfellow which also pushes the reluctant Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) to the stage. Despite the consequences to MG, whose heroism the Sprite stoked only to see him betrayed by Alyssa Chang (Olivia Liang), the Sprite turns out to be one of the show's more intriguing monsters of the week (and since they don't actually capture him there's always the chance at a return performance).
