Furious - The Gorgon
Much like Clarice, Furious is set around a promising agent of the FBI with past trauma whose career is being hampered by the number of less qualified men in her way preventing her from catching a serial killer. Our killer in Furious, who we see kill one victim before moving on to the next, is played by Lola Petticrew (who the show loves playing off her diminuitive 5'1" size). And for our dedicated agent we get Emmy Rossum as former NYPD Homicide Detective and now FBI newbie Alice Black.
Pulled out of her desk job answering crank calls by an old friend on the force, Alice makes a connection between a recent murder and one from several years ago, while also earning the grudging respect of a retiring FBI sex crimes agent (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), putting the first couple pieces together of a much larger mystery. Now if only those darned men will stay out of her way.
Rossum's involvement does give Furious something Clarice lacked (while also not burdening a brand-new show with expectations to follow The Silence of the Lambs). One episode in, I'm already tired of the gender politics which I'm hoping, but doubting, will fade into the background once the far more interesting case work takes precedence. It's not that I don't think there's not fertile ground to explore, it's just not what I'm looking for as the primary narrative in what is being promoted as a murder-thriller series.
As for our genius killer, I'm also a bit concerned if the show continues to split time evenly between her and or protagonist this half of Furious could run out of juice fairly quickly. I think there's mileage in Rossum's race to catch the killer, and delve into her past trauma, but I'm less sure that, as charming as Petticrew is here, that what boils down to a pretty basic black widow killer is captivating enough to hold up her half of the series.
