MacGyver - The Gauntlet

With "The Gauntlet," MacGyver Monday sends our intrepid science-adventurer MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) to Central America to extract a photojournalist (Robin Curtis) obsessed with taking down the corrupt regime. Curtis is your typical guest-star, at first fighting Mac until the danger of the situation, which also involves an old adversary (John Vernon) of MacGyver hellbent on revenge, becomes much too real. Although initially captured, the pair escape, but to get to freedom they'll need to travel 100 kilometers to the Mexican border with the country's army standing in their way.

Aptly named, "The Gauntlet," the episode offers many obstacles for MacGyver to DIY himself through including the final hurdle which, through a bit of misdirection, he and the journalist are able to slip past the border under the nose of all the soldiers guarding it. Our hero will make use of a variety of items over the episode including cameras, straps, a bell tower, firecrackers, both a bus and a jeep, a makeshift periscope, homemade fog, and exploding barrels. Disconnected from the rest of the episode, the opening gambit is also quite fun involving MacGyver using the map he just stole to patch a hot air balloon in midflight and make his escape.
