A Savage Art

A Savage Art: The Life & Cartoons of Pat Oliphant examines the life and career of political cartoonist Pat Oliphant, an Australian artist by birth known primarily for his critiques of American presidents and world events which were published by a wide variety of newspapers over the years including The Denver Post, The Washington Star, and The New York Times.

Widely regarded as the best editorial cartoonist of his generation, Bill Banowsky's documentary covers the basics of Oliphant's life and career including his creation of Punk (a small penguin he began inserting into his drawings, often in the edges, allowing added commentary in the artist's work). We also get some information about the man's later life and health struggles.

A straightforward documentary, A Savage Art: The Life & Cartoons of Pat Oliphant is what you would expect covering the basics of the artist's life as well as a brief history of political cartoons. The highlight of the film is Oliphant's work itself which we get countless examples of (although we only get details about some very specific pieces, often the most controversial of his work).
