Ella McCay
In a world where everyone is neurotic, but only in the cutest possible ways, Emma Mackey stars as Lt. Governor Ella McCay who gets promoted to become Governor when her boss (Albert Brooks) gets tapped for a Federal position. Hardworking and dedicated but lacking the people skills to smooth over her rougher edges, Ella is also dealing with the return of her estranged father (Woody Harrelson), the demands of her idiot of a husband (Jack Lowden), concerns over her sort of agoraphobic younger brother (Spike Fearn), and the tamest sex scandal ever seen in politics.
The calm in Ella's storm is found in her longtime secretary (Julie Kavner, who also narrates the film), the aunt (Jamie Lee Curtis) who raised her after her parents split up, and apparently the only member of her protection detail (Kumail Nanjiani) that isn't looking out for himself.
Ella McCay is a mess. It may not be the completely unwatchable mess I feared from the lackluster trailer, but it's a mess nevertheless. The performances are fine, and, despite the script is constantly telling us the opposite, Ella is easy enough to like and root for. However, what Brooks chooses to do with these actors is almost always more baffling than believable. Although Ella McCay wasn't the explosive train wreck I was expecting, it's more like a minor fender bender where all our actors walk away fine with no major damage or trouble and promptly move on with their lives after a couple hours of minor discomfort and bewilderment over what occurred.
