Dhurandhar The Revenge
After an extended flashback explaining the circumstances in which Jaskirat Singh Rangi became Hamza Ali Mazari (Ranveer Singh), the sequel continues the undercover agent's work pitting the local Karachi' gangs against each other while sewing dissent and rising in the ranks until he's able to land a crippling blow against Pakistan's terror network. Intentionally bloodier and gorier than the first film, Dhurandhar The Revenge completes the story loosely inspired by real events with a patriotic, and one could even argue propagandist, spin.
The sequel doesn't have as much time for the lighter moments that Dhurandhar was able to sprinkle in such as Hamza's romancing of Yalina (Sara Arjun). Following the tragic orgin story of how Hazma was born, which includes one of many terrific action sequences, the sequel focuses on the violence and terror he helps unleash in Lyari leaving the only real comedic moments for the film's epilogue where a supporting character's true intentions will be revealed.
If you are looking for movies that carefully examine the complexities of the socio-political relationship between India and Pakistan, or offer an unbiased account of events, these films are not for you. If you are looking for solid action and a stylish revenge thriller, however, Dhurandhar The Revenge will provide that in spades upping the body count considerably from the first film. The sequel returns most of the cast with a few additions including Jaskirat's childhood friend (Udaybir Sandhu) while enlarging the role of Major Iqbal (Arjun Rampal) as a sort of final boss for Hamza to vanquish.
The pair of films is at least as self-indulgent in rewriting history as Inglourious Basterds while also being nearly as entertaining. With the framing at the beginning (continued in the film's closing credits) helping to fill in our main character's history (which felt a bit lacking in the original) I slightly prefer Dhurandhar The Revenge to Dhurandhar, although I would recommend either to the right audience.
