The Bluff
Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Karl Urban star in this throwaway revenge porn with a bit of swashbuckling thrown in. Chopra stars as a former slave turned pirate whose past comes back to haunt her when Captain Connor (Urban) hits her shore in search of both his former lieutenant and the chest full of gold she stole before leaving that life behind.
The setup is a pretty common one, and isn't that different from Jason Statham's latest which hit theaters only last month also about a talented warrior forced out of hibernation to prove their mettle once more.
The plot offers revenge motives for both characters with Bloody Mary (Chopra) having a lifetime of hate built up for what she went through to survive at the hands of the pirates, while also needing to use those skills to safeguard her family and protect the life she's built for herself since leaving the pirate life behind, and Connor has years of resentment from Mary's betrayal pushing his men past common sense into the traps she has laid for them.
It's not that The Bluff is bad, but it feels a little too cheap and a little too by-the-numbers to stand out from any number of other similar films. The time period setting limits modern weapons allowing for more innovation from our protagonist to kill the horde that has come for her. And the pirate trappings provide a little flair, although, with the pirates stuck on land throughout most of the film, there's little time for swashbuckling.
