To help out a cocky young trader (Matt Lauria) at an investment bank Reese (Jim Caviezel) poses as a wealthy investor and learns about a multi-million dollar financial scam that his latest person if interest is about to uncover that may very well get him killed.
A little detective work by Finch (Michael Emerson) finds the investment firm is the focus of an SEC investigation and the fact Adam (Lauria) most likely perjured himself recently in front of the grand jury to protect his boss (Noelle Beck) with whom he's been having a secret affair. But the real danger for the trader is his looking into the discrepancies of the investments of his uncle (John Scurti) with the brokerage that don't make any financial sense.
When Reese is able to stop a pair of professional hits on the young man's life he begins to see the threat to the broker is much bigger than he thought. Finch's investigation into the financials uncovers heavy insider trading that cost the brokerages investors millions and which was run by Adam's best friend (David Furr) and an agent of the SEC (Scott Cohen).
It's Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson), however, who uncovers the brains behind the plan and money behind the assassins to be an old friend of Reese's - Elias (Enrico Colantoni). We'll have to see what Elias' return means for Reese over the rest of the season.
"Risk" also delves into Reese's time on the streets for the first time, which is where he was when the show began. Not only do we meet a homeless woman (Deirdre O'Connell) who watched over him during those dark days, but Reese admits to her, and himself, that he has a new friend in Finch who is doing that job now. It's a nice moment, especially given how untrustworthy Reese can be at times with Finch's unwillingness to divulge anything about his past.
