Josie and the Pussycats #1

Archie Comics relaunches one of its most notable properties with an all-new Josie and the Pussycats comic book (the first ongoing series to star the music trio since the original volume ended back in 1982). Set in present day (or the Archie Comics version of it), Josie and the Pussycats #1 introduces us to struggling solo wannabe Josie, her animal-crazed roommate Melody, and Valerie (the new friend they make at the local animal shelter).

Brought together on stage by the shelter's need for bands for its charity event, the Pussycats are born. The first issue also introduces the girls' foil Alexander Cabot III whose actions will unintentionally help bring the trio together when her attempts to sow dissension among the friends backfires and makes them an instant success.

The issue turns out to be a fun reboot of the classic trio. As a bonus, the comic includes a classic Josie and the Pussycats tale featuring the Pussycats early days as a band. Fans should enjoy this one; I'm not sure how long I'll stick with it, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. Worth a look.

[Archie, $3.99]
