Supergirl - Medusa

The first night of The CW's big four-part crossover event is really a crossover in name only. Only appearing in the epilogue, Barry (Grant Gustin) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) show up to recruit Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) for the wider adventure after Kara deals with the current threat of Cadmus and an Kryptonian biological weapon the terrorist group plans to use to wipe out all non-human life on Earth.

All of the strengths and weaknesses of this season can all be seen in this episode. On the plus side the episode continues to get strong scenes from Alex's (Chyler Leigh) subplot as the DEO agent comes out to her mother (Helen Slater), Katie McGrath make another appearance as Lena Luthor, and the show has me not hating the idea of a potential Mon-El (Chris Wood) and Kara romance. On the negative side Cadmus' grand plans continue to be a mix of genius and utter stupidity (are you really telling me they couldn't find an easier way to release the virus - which itself is highly questionable?), and Cyborg Superman (David Harewood) is even more ridiculous in his second appearance.

Promoted as part of a four-part crossover, I've got to say I'm disappointed to see just another standalone Supergirl episode. The episode does bring the Cadmus storyline to a head, and offers some character development for Lena, Mon-El, and Alex so if it hadn't been promoted as a crossover I might not feel so cheated. Although the dimensional rifts are teased a couple of times during the episode, there's nothing to connect it to the larger storyline (which given the number of commercials The CW has created to promote the event is surprising).
