After Yang

After Yang examines the lives of a family after the robotic nanny (Justin H. Min) to their daughter (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja) becomes unresponsive. The parents (Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith) are forced to face some hard truths about how much they relied on Yang who became far more of just a teacher of Chinese traditions to their adopted daughter but a loving older brother whose existence it turns out was more complex than anyone in the family truly understood.

Mostly through the use of the memory crystal removed from Yang's body, we see moments of him in flashbacks with the family as well as a friendship he cultivated outside the family with a young woman (Haley Lu Richardson) no one else was aware of.

Writer/director Kogonada's film is a slow, thoughtful, melancholy exploration on life, death, and what makes someone human. In their grief for the lost artificial intelligence, we begin to explore each other member of their family and the struggles they have connecting to each other without Yang. The film is available on both Blu-ray and DVD and for rental or purchase through various streaming platforms. Some versions do include your basic behind-the-scenes featurette with interviews from cast and crew.
