The Irrational - Cheating Life

The hit-and-run death of a former scientist turned fitness guru he once knew leads Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) to look into discovering the man's death was no accident (although it will take longer than the audience to come to the logical conclusion of what really happened). The show continues to play down the roles of Phoebe (Molly Kunz) and Owen (Arash DeMaxi), with Kylie (Travina Springer) playing shotgun for her brother rather than one of his assistants, while also limiting Alec's interactions with the FBI to a single scene (sadly they still get their own subplots which continues to spin their wheels).

The choices here show the writers playing with the various elements of the show attempting to get the mix right. The mystery of the week works as does Alec's interactions with the local cop (Paloma Nozicka) who doesn't already know his methods or have years of personal baggage to manage. Kylie getting a larger role in the case is an interesting choice that works as well, and lays a seed for the return of our local cop as a potential love interest for her, but it does leave Alec's assistants with nothing to do for another episode. As we've seen in the past, limiting the FBI's role in the case does seem lead to a better episode (although this one does get dragged down with not one but two different FBI subplots, one on the case and one on romantic relationships, taking up far too much time).
