Person of Interest - Panopticon

After living new lives provided by The Machine for weeks the team finally receives a new number. In his role as a narcotics officer, Reese (Jim Caviezel) joins Fusco (Kevin Chapman) to look into an Egyptian immigrant (Navid Negahban) forced to work for a small-time criminal organization needing the man's skills to create a computer network safe from Samaritan's watching eyes in time for the biggest heroin shipment of the year. The group's pressure, and Reese's intervention, put the man's teenage son in danger leading to Reese deciding to make several questionable decisions including enlisting the help of Elias (Enrico Colantoni).

Despite Finch's (Michael Emerson) refusal to get involved and Shaw's (Sarah Shahi) concerns about blowing their carefully crafted new identities which are the only thing keeping Samaritan from finding them, Reese jumps head first into action forcing Shaw to step in and reign her friend end by preventing him from escalating the situation and bringing Samaritan down on all their heads. Meanwhile, Root (Amy Acker) takes a trip to the local university to make an impassioned plea to middling professor whose creation and friends desperately need his help.

The war against Samaritan isn't likely to be won anytime soon, but the first episode of the new season lays some of the building blocks for that battle in the form of the old school phone network and Finch literally going underground to create a new base of operations. Reese's promotion puts him in Carter's old desk and The Machine even finds a way for Shaw to blow off some steam before blowing a gasket. Root's actions while not annoying Shaw, and those of the missing computer programmers, are the only ones which aren't developed here but I would assume we'll see plenty of Ms. Groves over the course of the season.
